List of Navodaya Vidyalaya Schools in India

The education system in India has faced a number of revolutions in recent times and one of the positive results of these revolutions is the establishment of the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Schools. The scheme to start the Navodaya Vidyalaya Schools was first initiated by the Late Prime Minister of India Shri Rajiv Gandhi, who was high prolific and productive during his tenure as the leader of the country. His vision to provide quality education to children of all strata of society was greatly welcomed and this vision became a reality in the form of the establishment of the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Schools. The Navodaya schools have been established in many regions around the country and they are all managed by the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti that comes under the Ministry of Human Resource Development that is a part of the Central Government of India’s Department of Education.

Features of the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Schools

The medium of instruction in the schools is in English and is primarily a residential school. Admission to both boys and girls are sought and the schools are affiliated to CBSE or the Central Board of Secondary Education. The hostel facilities provided in the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Schools are of very high quality and cleanliness, discipline and obedience are some of the qualities that are inculcated in the students on a daily basis.

Activities in the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Schools

Training is provided for various sporting activities and every Navodaya school campus is well equipped by a gymnasium and facilities for indoor games. The Bharat Scouts and Guide chapter in Navodaya Vidyalaya Schools is highly active and take part in most of the competitions and events held under the aegis of the Sports and Games Federation of India.

Apart from these extra-curricular activities, the Navodaya is proud of its exclusive scheme known as the Exchange program scheme. This encourages children to understand and respect the other linguistic population of the country. Focused on enhancing the concept of national integration, the program involves the exchange of students in the 9th standard between Navodaya Vidyalaya Schools located in the linguistically different regions.

At present there are 593 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Schools in the country since the first school started functioning in the 1985 in Amravati a district of the State of Maharashtra. The one factor that seems to negate the scheme is that there a lack of uniformity in the distribution of the Navodaya Vidyalaya Schools as there are many regions in the country like Tamil Nadu for example that do not have access to these centers of learning.
